Learn a little bit about Cy Lawson, Beacon Hill’s Associate Broker with the Small Business Team

Cy, on a deep sea fishing trip

Please tell us about your family, interests, and hobbies.

I grew up in Ruckersville, Virginia with my two younger brothers. Growing up, I spent a majority of my time competing in academic events. After high school, I earned my Associate’s Degree from Piedmont Virginia Community College and went to work in the airline industry before going into the insurance industry. Over the course of the pandemic I’ve picked up a few new hobbies like painting, hiking, fishing, and learning to play the guitar. I’m also a big supporter of UVA athletics, go Wahoos!

What is your professional background and how it has led you to working in environmental insurance?

Before joining the Beacon Hill team, I worked in training for the airline industry. A large portion of my duties included ensuring stations and personnel were compliant with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, which has been a solid foundation to build upon as I’ve worked for Beacon Hill. I started in the Production Assistant position in 2020, which I held until I joined our Small Business Team in October 2021.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in your career?

To learn from your mistakes. Throughout my life and professional career, I’ve always believed every mistake is just another lesson to learn. Human error is inevitable, mistakes will always happen; but each one presents an opportunity to learn something new and move forward.

If you had to choose one word to describe the most important motivator to being a leader in your career, what would it be and why? What are you doing specifically at Beacon Hill to help you achieve this?

Efficiency. I’ve found that good time management skills are vital to providing quality service to the agents and agencies we work with. I think that being able to perform your job quickly and correctly is key to being competitive in this industry. As a part of the Small Business Team we do this by working to have an intimate understanding of our carriers’ appetites and processes in order to decrease the turn around time for our agents.
